O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) was formed in 1996 by vocalist and guitarist Marc Roberge and drummer Chris Culos in Rockville, Maryland. Guitarist Richard On and bassist Benj Gershman were later recruited to join O.A.R. While the members of O.A.R. were still in high school, the band released its first album The Wanderer online without a record label in 1997. The Wanderer featured the popular eight-minute song "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker."
The members of O.A.R. graduated from the same Maryland high school and decided to attend Ohio State University where they picked up saxophonist Jerry DePizzo. O.A.R. recorded the demo Souls Aflame in 2000, featuring the song “City on Down.” While at Ohio State University, O.A.R. quickly gained word-of-mouth popularity by performing for various organizations around campus. The exposure helped to build O.A.R. a large internet following and helped obtain a record deal with Everfine Records.
In 2001, O.A.R. released its third album Risen, which debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard internet sales chart. The following year, O.A.R. released the live album Any Time Now. In 2003, O.A.R. released an album of original material called In Between Now and Then on its new label Lava Records. O.A.R’s fifth album Stories of a Stranger produced the singles “Love and Memories,” “Heard the World” and “Lay Down.”
Now that O.A.R. was in the mainstream, the band began to sell out almost every tour date, which culminated in a raucous concert event captured on the album Live From Madison Square Garden. O.A.R. album All Sides dropped in 2008 and featured the crossover smash “Shattered”.
